Position Title: Custodian

SUMMARY:
The custodian shall provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Keeps the building neat and clean at all times.
- Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
- Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
- Scrubs, hoses down, disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Cleans all chalkboards or wipe off boards as needed.
- Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the school administration.
- Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
- Keeps the grounds free from trash.
- As needed, performs grounds maintenance such as edging, trims shrubbery, pulls and sprays weeds, maintains landscape beds and mows grass as needed on school campus.
- Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian.
- Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian any emergency or danger to school property.
- Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.
- Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the head custodian or principal.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or GED preferred. Must be 18 years old.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this position.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds such as bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.

Support Worker II (Maintenance Worker II) Hourly Pay Scale
The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
