Position Title:      Library Aide

SUMMARY: 

Under the direct supervision of the Library Media Specialist, the Media Aide will assist with students in the library to meet instructional goals and objectives and assist patrons with the full use of library services, and provide support to the Library Media Specialist by freeing him/her from non-professional duties. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Operate computer system for circulating library materials.
  • Shelve books.
  • Staff circulation desk.
  • Supervise student helpers.
  • Participate in maintenance of library space (dusting, repairing and updating signage and/or displays, cleaning tables, etc.) with the assistance of library helpers.
  • Pull teacher book requests.
  • Read shelves to keep collection organized.
  • Process and prepare new books for circulation.
  • Process and prepare books identified for weeding from collection.
  • Pull books for weeding based on criteria set by the Library Media Specialist.
  • Train student helpers.
  • Assist with inventory.
  • Assist students who need additional support with instructional tasks.
  • Deliver requested books and technology resources to teachers.
  • Help patrons locate library resources.
  • Keep the library open and running smoothly when librarian has to be out of the library for collaboration, professional development, etc.
  • Receive walk-in patrons and guests, providing information and assistance.
  • Repair books with torn pages, broken bindings, missing barcodes and call numbers, etc.
  • Supervise technology use by students.
  • Perform duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma

Meets highly qualified standards (Associates Degree preferred, 60 hours college credit from an accredited college, or passing score on the ParaPro Exam).  A good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write and/or type routine reports and correspondences.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of district personnel or organizations.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to quickly assess employee, departmental, and administrative needs and provide timely feedback.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.  Ability to work independently, with limited supervision.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, district employees, and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group.  Ability to provide assistance to students with academic work.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision.  Some driving required.  The employee is frequently required to interact with the public or other staff.  The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being of students.

Aide Pay Scale

 

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year.  Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

 

EVALUATION: 

Performance of this job evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
