Position Title:     Grounds Maintenance

SUMMARY: 

To help maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Picks up trash, limbs, and other debris; digs and patches holes; and shovels dirt.
  • Paints, marks and stripes parking lots.
  • Repairs or assists in repairs of water and sewer lines; lays water and sewer lines; installs clean outs; and makes water and sewer taps.
  • Repairs valve boxes and adjusts manholes and valves.
  • Maintains grounds; mows grass; trims shrubs and hedges; operates weed eaters; place pine straw around flower beds and shrubs; and rakes leaves, etc., as needed.
  • Performs general cleaning of buildings and grounds.
  • Delivers supplies to work sites.
  • Performs or assists in minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work.
  • Supports stadium maintenance and buildings and grounds operation, as needed.
  • Performs concrete finishing work on sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
  • Installs portable fencing, bleachers, and trash receptacles for school events.
  • Operates hand and power tools.
  • Grinds tree roots in sewers with Rodden machine.
  • Installs and repairs playground equipment.
  • Assists Mechanics, Vehicle Operators, and Equipment Operators, when needed.
  • Installs or assists in the installation of parking lot, scoreboard lights, and replaces bulbs.
  • Maintains equipment and tools and notifies supervisor of equipment problems.
  • Operates a variety of light equipment in the performance duties.
  • May be required to drive a company vehicle to perform certain job duties to any location within the District.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or GED preferred.  Must be 18 years old.

One year experience related to assigned duties of position or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid driver's license may be required with an acceptable driving record for those individuals required to drive a company vehicle.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

None

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, control drawings, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Reports any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to pass a district written and physical test.   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance to scheduled deadlines.  Must follow safety training and instructions provided by supervisor. 

 

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a tool box.  Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and air compressors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Operate hand and power tools/equipment inclusive of, but not limited to: blowers, light construction equipment, bucket truck, out-front mower, farm tractors, hand tools, buffers, pick-up truck, dingo, power tools and chain saws.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.   Frequently the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.  Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time in dirt, dust, extreme temperature, and noxious fumes and odors. Must wear safety gear when appropriate, and follow safety training and instructions provided by the supervisor.  Must maintain all personal protective equipment required for the job.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

12 months

Support Worker II Hourly Pay Schedule

 

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year.  Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

 

EVALUATION: 

Performance of this job evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
