Position Title:        Special Education Aide
Department:          Special Programs

FLSA Status:          Non-Exempt
 
Summary:
Assists the teacher in general daily classroom instructional activities. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the teacher in the implementation of the instructional program.
  • Assist the teacher in preparation of materials and activities for the instructional program.
  • Assist teacher in various non-instructional tasks, such as record keeping.
  • Assists teacher in supervision of students.
  • Assist in assembling/hanging material on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.
  • Operate standard school equipment such as laminator, copier and audiovisual, etc.
  • Escorts students to and from various rooms.
  • Working with special needs students you must be willing to do any of the following:
    1. Feeding children: preparing food, blending, monitoring special diet restrictions, tube feeding (cleaning and caring for tubing and equipment).
    2. Diapering: lifting, cleaning, applying ointment as needed, and disposing of soiled diapers by bagging appropriately.  Clean changing surface.
    3. Watching: observe for seizure activity, breathing problems, safety, collect data
    4. Positioning: change positions a minimum of 3x daily, (double lifts only to prevent staff injury) proper use of equipment such as side lyers, standers and swings.
    5. Inclusion: take to activities such as art and assist with activity and manage behavior.
    6. Medication: be aware of needed medication, which may involve minor procedure (will be trained).
    7. Mobility: assist with mobility.
    8. Loading and unloading buses: putting wheelchairs on the lifts and removing them safely.
    9. Help in evacuating multiple wheelchairs as needed (i.e. Fire drills).
    10. Laundry: keeping bibs, wash clothes, etc. washed and dried daily.
    11. Sanitize class equipment and toys.
    12.  Dishes: washed and sterilize individual adapted cups, etc.
    13. Monitor students during and in the absence of the classroom teacher to ensure the physical and environmental safekeeping of them and to ensure the conduct and discipline are in control.
    14. Provide instruction to the students as advised by the teacher. 
    15. Assist teacher in checking and evaluating student’s work; teach students individually and in small groups reinforcing skills based upon instructional guidelines.
    16. Monitor duties such as hallways, lunchroom, restrooms and bus duty; ensure appropriate student conduct during these periods; escort students to designated activity areas such as music room, computer room, art class, assemblies, etc.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:
Meets Highly Qualified standards: Associate’s Degree preferred, or High School diploma and general education degree with 60 hours college credit from an accredited college, or passing score on the ParaPro Assessment. Experience in working with children.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as simple instructions, short correspondence and memos, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write and/or type routine reports and correspondences.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of district personnel or organizations.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to quickly assess employee, departmental, and administrative needs and provide timely feedback.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and district employees. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group.

Physical demands consist of frequently standing, talking or listening, walking or sitting for a period of time.  The employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds; such as lifting to a changing table, pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture, etc.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

SPED Aide Hourly Pay Scale
 
The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year.  Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.
 
Evaluation: 
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
